Meet Swati

"I started this life as a daughter, one among seven siblings, the third one to be precise. Today I am a mother, a daughter, a wife, and I play many other roles. But the most important one, the one I love, is being a nature cure practitioner."

Early life

Swati was five when her father, the late Dr. B. Premchand, moved the family from Bombay to Chennai to practise nature cure. There was no money and no certainty, only his conviction. He was one of the finest practitioners of his generation, and people came to him when they had run out of options everywhere else, often as a last resort, holding on to a thread of hope.

She grew up inside that practice. Her childhood looked nothing like other children's. While they had sugar and packaged food, her family ate fruit, jaggery in place of sugar, red rice instead of white, meals cooked in earthen pots with cold-pressed oils. The people who came to be healed arrived from every kind of life and every part of the world, and she grew up among them.

She helped her father from the beginning, and in the mornings and evenings she walked with his patients along Thiruvanmiyur beach, listening to them. That was her real education, years of it, before any of the formal kind. She learned how illness actually behaves, how people actually think, and what it takes for someone to change how they live.

Education

Her training did not begin with naturopathy. She first read English literature, and then took a postgraduate degree in Jainology. That is not a detour from the story. Jain thought, its discipline of restraint, of non-harm, of not imposing, still runs through how she practises: she intervenes less than most, because she trusts the body to do more.

The formal qualifications in nature cure came later, by which time she had already spent years inside her father's practice. She earned her diplomas from the English Naturopathic College in Lucknow and the Indian School of Naturopathy in Bhuj, and began practising in 1993 at the Sri Guru Ganesha Nature Cure Sanatorium in Chennai. Later she brought the work into her own home in Arcot, where it has been ever since.

But the deepest part of her training was never formal. It was the years beside her father, the walks along the beach, the listening, and the decades of practice since, where every case taught her something no syllabus could. Thirty years in, she is still learning the same way she started, from the people in front of her.

Her Approach

She begins with the person, not the protocol. Before any guidance, she takes the time to understand the person’s life in full, the background, the routine, the responsibilities someone is carrying, because a plan that ignores how a person actually lives will not hold. From there she guides them, wherever they are, toward the right food and the right lifestyle for their body.

But the body is only where she starts. Health, to her, is not the physical alone, it is a vital body, a settled mind, steady emotions, and something deeper underneath. So the work does not stop at diet and lifestyle. She counsels people through what they are carrying, and helps them detox and reset the mind and the emotions as much as the body, because in her understanding nothing in a person exists on its own, and so nothing heals on its own. You have to heal at every level, or the healing does not last.

Through all of it she keeps the philosophy of nature cure simple. She explains what is happening inside the body in simplest terms, until a person understands themselves well enough to carry it forward on their own. And she stays close through the hardest part, the stretch of healing when things feel worse before they turn, which is exactly where people give up if no one is beside them.

Her experience with natural living

Her experience with natural living

She has never asked anyone to try something she has not lived herself. Raw food came in slowly, in short stretches at first, so she could see what it did to her own body before she trusted it with anyone else's.

What she felt was hard to argue with. She was lighter, and happier. Her body felt cleaner as the years went on, as though it were letting go of what it had been carrying. Her energy came back. Her mind cleared. Most of what she eats is raw and plant-based now, and she has been without dairy for some years.

That is years of living the lifestyle she teaches. It is also why she is patient with everyone else about it. She knows how long it takes and which parts are hard, because she has been through it herself.
